Topic1: Contemporary Development and Problem Perspectives of Applied Ethics

Time: May 28, 2021 (Friday) 9:00

Venue: A314 Tianshan Hall, Yuzhong Campus

Introduction to the lecture

Applied ethics is one of the main theoretical achievements of ethics towards the present day. On the one hand, it is a realistic representation of ethics as practical wisdom, and on the other hand, it also implies the emergence of real problems as a driving force for ethics itself. Therefore, we can understand the main state of the development of ethics on this path by portraying and reflecting on the overall outline of contemporary applied ethics. At the same time, since applied ethics is a problem domain, and moreover, ethics is used as a kind of methodology to cut into the problem. Therefore, we also need to examine it in the light of the development of the basic theory of ethics in order to ensure its theoretical legitimacy. First of all, applied ethics is not detached from the three traditional dimensions of ethical research, but is the application and reflection of ethical theories in specific practice areas or problem groups. At the same time, specific changes in social practices also constitute reflections on traditional ethical theories. Thereby, the adjustment of specific ethical norms and value levels is promoted. Therefore, the study of applied ethics has two dimensions of reflection: one is how to select and implement certain ethical principles in specific practical problems so that they can conform to people's moral customs or moral experiences; the other is to seek to find an ethical system that is compatible with it according to a more basic metaphysics and methodology when new fields of practice appear or life practices change. Second, applied ethics, because it is so closely related to people's practical activities, gives rise to the contemporary problem that for every new field of practice that emerges, a particular applied ethics seems to arise. Superficially, this can easily lead to the fragmentation of applied ethics. Therefore, there is a need to conduct a horizontal comparative analysis of the corresponding achievements in applied ethics, so as to discover the possible intersection and overlap among them, and thus break down the research barriers between related fields and give more legitimacy to the achievements of this field of study. Third, with the deepening of people's practice fields and some new developments with the basic theories of ethics in contemporary times. Applied ethics has gained great opportunities for progress in both breadth and depth. Among them, the technological achievements represented by digital technology and artificial intelligence, the economic activities represented by platform economy and sharing economy, and even the new ways of communication based on information all provide a wide space for the development of applied ethics. At the same time, the emergence of new ethical theories such as care ethics, community ethics, and negotiation ethics has also provided more theoretical resources for applied ethics. The exploration and application of these resources also directly affect the theoretical depth that applied ethics can achieve.

Topic2: Norms and Breakthroughs in Academic Research - Writing and Publishing Papers in Humanities and Social Sciences as an Example

Time: May 28th, 2021 (Friday) 15:00

Place: 507 Guangyun Building, Chengguan Campus

Introduction to the lecture

The academic paper is one of the important expressions of research results in humanities and social sciences, and the carrier for the majority of researchers to express their thoughts and opinions. Therefore, the writing of academic papers needs to fully reflect the author's mastery of the norms of academic research. It is only by making academic innovations and breakthroughs on this basis that the article can finally be published. From the viewpoint of the majority of academic papers, there is a great distance between the mastery of academic norms and the breakthrough of ideas. Especially from the perspective of academic journals, the results of normative academic research need to be reflected from the combing of academic history, the consensus of academic community, and the mastery of academic language. Only on this basis can we ensure the frontiers of academic research, the intersectionality of academic perspectives and a clear sense of problems, and other requirements of academic innovation can be realized.
